ARE YOU AN AQUAHOLIC?

TOO MUCH H20 CAN ACTUALLY BE DANGEROUS

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ve probably heard a lot about water and weight loss. Can drinking more water really help you lose weight? The short answer is yes -- and no. If you’re already well hydrated and getting plenty of water, getting more water into your diet probably won’t make a lot of difference. But if you’re going through your days a little -- or a lot dehydrated, as many people are, getting enough water could help. Dr. Christopher Calapai, D.O. is a Manhattan Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine, and anti-aging medicine. He states that, “There is always the case of too much of a good thing. Some people are such water drinking devotees that they are aquaholics, resulting in overhydration.”   As a result, experts now fear we've become so focused on staying hydrated that we're guzzling water to life-threatening extremes.

Dr. Calapai points out that, “There are two types of overhydration: Increased water intake and retaining water. Increased water intake—or drinking more water than the kidneys can get rid of in the urine—can cause too much water to collect in the body.”
When the body is unable to get rid of excess water, it is said to be retaining water. This happens with several medical conditions, for instance. It can be dangerous because it throws off the balance between water and sodium in the blood.

Overhydration caused by drinking too much water can occur both consciously and unconsciously. Dr. Calapai says that, “A person may drink too much water during exercise. Some medications can also cause dry mouth and cause an increase in thirst. Increased thirst can also be caused by uncontrolled diabetes. Psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia (primary polydipsia or psychogenic polydipsia) can also cause compulsive water drinking.”

What Are the Symptoms of Overhydration?
Symptoms of overhydration may not be recognized in the early stages but can include:
·        Nausea and vomiting
·        Headache
·        Changes in mental state (confusion or disorientation)
If left untreated, overhydration can lead to dangerously low levels of sodium in the blood (hyponatremia). This can cause more-severe symptoms, such as:
·        Muscle weakness, spasms or cramps
·        Seizures
·        Unconsciousness
·        Coma

How Can Overhydration Be Prevented?
Endurance athletes can reduce the risk of overhydration by weighing themselves before and after a race to determine how much water they have lost and need to replenish.
Dr. Calapai emphasizes that, ”Individuals should avoid drinking more than one liter per hour of fluid. Drinking more fluids before and during a race or an intensive athletic exertion can also help you avoid the need to drink too much water afterwards. Sports beverages that contain the electrolytes sodium and potassium are also recommended, as both are lost in sweat.”

So how do you know how much water you need?
For starters, don’t rely solely on thirst, says Calapai. “As soon as you put water on your tongue, you kill your thirst mechanism.” Instead, he suggests the following:

1. Weigh yourself daily for a week, to check hydration. “Your body weight shouldn’t fluctuate too much,” Calapai says.

2. Notice how much you pee—and its color—in the morning. It should be a copious amount and pale or clear.

3. Aim to wake feeling hydrated. If you’re thirsty when you get out of bed in the morning, you may not be consuming enough fluids.

4. When choosing sports drinks, search for labels with low sugar. Dr. Calapai recommends about 5 grams per 8-ounce serving. “Even natural drinks like coconut water have too much sugar and potassium to hydrate.”

5. Coffee, tea, and watery fruits and vegetables count toward fluid intake. “Also, caffeine is not a diuretic,” Dr. Calapai says. “It’s about volume, so if you drink five cups, you’ll pee more.”

6. Start slowly. “Sleep is a six- to eight-hour fast, so if you drink three cups of juice or water right away, you’ll trigger the volume response. Sip instead.”

If you have an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, or kidney problems, talk to your doctor about the best treatments for those conditions. If you experience excessive thirst or an overly strong urge to drink water, contact your doctor before you develop symptoms—it could indicate a medical problem that requires treatments.

What your lips say about you

Do you know that your lips really do speak… literally your lip prints can unveil lots of fascinating facts about  YOU; Who you are, What you want, and What you need ! And here I thought it was all genetic. According to Lip reading experts, Lips can reveal a lot about the personality of the people.

 What exactly is Lipsology?
Lipsology is the art of lip print reading, is a fun, yet skill based tool (similar in some ways to handwriting analysis) that can be used to learn about personality traits, energy levels, state of mind, and even some information about current or older health issues. There are 25 categories of lip prints and over 100 sub-categories so there's a lot of data for a Lipsologist to read and learn about you. This information is gathered based on the size, shape, color intensity, and special markings of your lip prints.Apparently there is only 7 certified lip experts in the world.

How is Lipsology Done?
Lipstick and kiss cards, yes men wear it too .
Here is a photo I found online so you can figure out which shape you are.  Most can pin out which lip shape they are but for the ones with “combination” lips, choose the one that suits you best!

They are many shapes of the lips and each shape had a different way of taking. "The most important thing your lips speak to is [what you're like] in relationships and how giving you are," says Jean Haner, an expert in face reading and author of The Wisdom of Your Face."You were born with the features you have for a reason — every feature is linked to a part of your personality and they all work together to represent who you are." Here, Haner lays out what your lip shape says about you based on her studies in face reading derived from Chinese medicine.  If you’re curious what your lips say about you, take a look at the list below.
1. Thin Lips (Is your mouth small, and your lips thin and defined)Then you’re measured and selective, and you go for quality over quantity. Some senses are much more important to you than others, and you tend to neglect the rest. You like things to be done properly. Your tastes push you to extremes; when you’re into something you need to know everything there is to know about it!
For those who have thin lips and a small mouth, deep connections are not always a top priority. They can be content as loners and are not as comfortable in relationships. Lasting love is possible – but it could take some extra effort and patience to get there.
2. Thick Lips: You often fall in love and less likely to act rationally. You’re straight forward and won’t hide your desire.

3. Full Lips (Naturally Full Top and Bottom Lips) : This lip shape correlates with a strong desire to be a mother and shows how much you care about others. It represents someone who is giving, will put others first, and finds great joy in doing that. This person is also someone who wants to have a good circle of friends and a good connection with others. They really value relationships.  You are open and fulfilled. You use your experiences, try new things and share them with others. You are an empathetic individual who values your relationships. Giving and receiving is important to you. You radiate confidence and this makes you devastatingly attractive to men. You love the pleasures in life and seek maximum thrills in bed.

4. Wide Lips : Women with wide-stretched lips like are lively and have a large circle of friends with many different interests. As a perfectionist, you are very successful and talented, and you like to determine your own fate.

5. Round Lips : People with button-shaped lips are interested in exploration and a little bit rebellious and flirtatious. People are naturally drawn to you because of your “vivacious charm mixed with your risque fashion sense. You glow with bright charisma.

6. Heart-Shaped Lips/Bow-shaped Lips : Bow-shaped lips have a peaked cupid’s bow. People with cute heart-shaped lips are independent, seductive , expressive and great communicators. Heart shapes are expressive in voicing opinions. Is quick-minded, and very creative. Because they're so quick-minded, they can also be highly reactive and often not think before speaking, whether what they're saying is kind or mean-spirited.

7. Thick upper lip, thin lower lip: That means you’re someone who loves to create drama in relationships. You’re a giving person and you’re concerned about the other person’s needs in the relationship as well as your own.

An Injected Fuller Upper Lip: In Chinese face reading, if you change your face, you throw off your system, thereby changing your destiny. So, if you mess with your natural features, you mess with the path you're meant to have. And since every feature represents a part of your personality and they all work together to represent who you are, altering a physical feature is like altering your being.
According to Haner, if you mess with your lips, you can become needier, more selfish, and more out of control emotionally. And the more you plump them up, the more you welcome drama. Watch out if your upper lip is filled larger than your lower lip — that means you're someone who loves to create drama in relationships.

8. Thin upper lip, thick lower lip: You’re someone who wants to be pampered. You can also be a pleasure seeker. You look like a cool person, but actually, you have a strong desire for love. Once you fall in love, it’s likely hard for you to get back up again. The upside to this altered lip shape is that you’re also someone who really wants to enjoy life.
An Injected Fuller Lower Lip: This means you're someone who wants to be pampered. You can also be a pleasure seeker. The upside to this altered lip shape is that you're also someone who really wants to enjoy life.
9. Goldilocks Lips:Like the fairy tale, these symmetric lips are “just right.” Your lips aren’t thick or thin, but medium-size, and your cupid’s bow doesn’t have super-defined peaks, nor does it lack definition. If you have lips like this, it means you’re pretty even-keeled in relationships. You’ll do just fine and won’t go overboard when it comes to drama or giving too much. You’re not needy or clingy, but you do crave a sense of connection in relationships.

I fall under full/thick and it’s pretty dead on! But I’m pretty open minded, but what do you guys think? Would love to get your feedback.

IS CREPEY SKIN CREEPING YOU OUT?

IS CREPEY SKIN CREEPING YOU OUT?
What is crepey skin? Is it wrinkles? Thinning skin? A combination?
Crepiness is a term used to describe the changes in skin noted with aging. Skin becomes thinner, more fragile, and wrinkles more easily. We can see this first occurring on the backs of hands, décolleté, and around the eyes. What causes crepey skin? Is it due to sun damage? Aging?

Dr. Kally Papantoniou, a NYC board certified dermatologist explains that, “Crepey skin occurs with age and the process is accelerated by photo-aging (frequent sun exposure without protection) which leads to the break down of collagen and elastin fibers, causing skin to lose its elasticity and become thinner.” For those of us who already dabble in Botox, filler, and facials, what can be done about this additional “evil?”

Prevention for crepey skin.
Dr. Papantoniou says that, “The most important way to prevent creepiness is to protect skin from sun exposure, the UVA and UVB rays are the leading cause for crepey skin, thus daily photo-protection is key in preventing creepiness.”

Which over-the-counter products and solutions does Dr. Papantoniou  recommend to specifically treat crepey skin?

For face-  SkinCeuticals A.G.E. interrupter
For eyes- Revision makes a cream – DEJ repair, for the delicate area around the eyes to address crepiness.
For neck- Revision Nectifirm
For chest- SkinCeuticals Neck, Chest & Hand Repair
For arms- SkinCeuticals Body Tightening Concentrate
For legs- Excipial 10% lotion, or Amlactin

What is the ideal way to apply products?
For best results it is recommended that you make sure to cleanse the affected area prior to applying creams to treat skin. Applying the creams twice daily will provide the best results.

What can you expect from a crepey skin cream? Temporary or long-term?
Depending on the types of creams being used, in the short-term you can expect, reduction of the appearance of crepey skin. The long-term benefits from keeping skin hydrated and applying certain ingredients to heal and repair skin, may induce new growth.

What ingredients make these products work?
Dr. Papantoniou explains that, “Creams often will contain proteins called peptides such as Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 which act on the cellular level to help prevent the degradation of collagen, and can help promote synthesis. Hyaluronic acid will help plump and hydrate skin, which improves the immediate appearance of crepey skin. The addition of antioxidants such as Vitamin C, E have the effect of reducing oxidative stress and damage to skin and can stimulate new collagen growth. Certain plant extracts can also be found as ingredients in tightening creams for their natural properties. Using a retinol containing product can also have great effect on rebuilding collagen and rejuvenating skin.”
Dr. Papantoniou warns to steer clear of creams that don't contain any active ingredients, and are essentially just moisturizers. These are just gimmicks and won’t help with crepey skin.

Is there any evidence that higher-priced products are better?
Dr. Papantoniou says that, “I would not base the effectiveness on the price tag of a product. Research instead what ingredients it contains and read reviews, this can help guide your selection.”

Are all over the counter products limited in what they can achieve?
Over the counter products can actually be very helpful in this instance, the only prescription medication that will perform better is retinoic acid, but retinol can still be very effective is used regularly.

What are Dr. Papantoniou’s in-office treatments for crepey skin?
Her favorite treatments for crepey skin are the Thermismooth 250, which feels like a hot stone massage, it can be used under the eyes, neck area, and almost anywhere on the body. Thermismooth 250 works by stimulating skin to produce collagen and rejuvenate. It tightens and can even help the appearance of cellulite. The Ulthera is also a powerful energy based machine, using ultrasound energy to stimulate tightening and new collagen as well. “Ulthera is great for the face, neck and chest area especially. For even more of a lift there is the ThermiTight, which is a minimally invasive procedure in which radiofrequency energy is placed under the surface of the skin, and stimulates skin remodeling with results that are very impressive,” says Dr. Papantoniou.

NKD SKN

"Get a gorgeous summer glow in seconds with NKD SKN self tanners and our hero – the amazing daily moisturizer tan – Gradual Glow.
Designed for all skin tones, these tan formulas are infused with organic and natural skincare extracts that hydrate, condition and nourish skin, and are completely paraben, perfume and alcohol free. Unlike other daily moisturizer tans, NKD SKN dries instantly on skin, so you can get dressed straight after applying. With revolutionary Odour Remove™ technology, which erases the tan smell completely rather than attempting to mask it, NKD SKN tans give a natural glow for up to 7 days, that fades perfectly back to nothing, for the most realistic tanning experience without sun exposure."
If you have been following me on IG , you will notice the countless post I have using this NKD SKN system.WHy? Because I L-O-V-E it! ( Here I am using Medium in the Mousse Application)
Anyone loves a good tan all year round.  Considering I live in Toronto, I only get " tanning weather" seasonally so I always try a healthy alternative.
Personally, I love using gradual gradual self tanners because I am always worried about streaking and blotchy applications when using an instant tanning kit. But, I was extremely impressed with NKD SKN as their system is pretty straightforward ( shower and exfoliate before application ) and easy to use.  The kit comes with Daily Tan Moisturizer and foam mitt for easy application.  You have the otion of getting a Tinted Tan Mouse or Tinted Tan Liquid Psray ( Light , Medium and Dark ) I opted to try Medium and dark :)
Here I am wearing the Medium Mouse all over my body and including my face.  I was a little nervous around my face as it was more difficult to conceal if I messed it up! ( first time user!)  As you can see... flawless application!

Photo Friendly Foundations

Model : Samantha Rose  / Photo : Helen Tran / Make Up and Hair May Nguyen

"Why do I look pale / white in my photos?"

There are many reasons why this could be happening. It could be your flash or even the wrong foundation colour match . I have found that the most common reason is actually the type of foundation you may be wearing.

After trying different foundations, this is what I discovered. The next time you know you are the subject in front of the camera, keep this in mind.

Non Photo Friendly Foundations

I have noticed that foundations with high SPF ( titanium dioxide ) silicone based foundations and some mineral based liquid foundations tend to reflect light or " flash" which will create the white cast on your face when in reality it looks okay. We are not suggesting that you boycott these foundations completely as it does have great benefits as a foundation.  Even simply applying SPF or even Face Primer under or over your foundation can also cause your foundation to " reflect light". Some primers are silicone based, so if you want to prevent the " white cast" try to stick to water-based primers and foundations .

Make Up Brush Cleaning 101

Brushes can get very expensive, especially if you are purchasing high end brushes at high end cost. As Artists ourselves, we understand how crucial brushes can be during a makeup application.  Some people  will invest more money into them for it's craftsmanship, durability, or features etc.  This being said, you would want to keep them for as long as possible.  Years...

One of the main reason why some makeup artist tend to buy numerous of the same brushes is mainly the "in between cleaning".  As great as some of the makeup brush cleaners  we currently have in the market, some can very damaging to your brushes because most brush cleaners are alcohol based which disinfects and dries quicker for instant use. Which makes complete sense but also very drying and harsh on your brushes. We suggest using instant brush cleaners when necessary, even after a shoot its always great to go home and give your brushes some TLC that it deserves.

Just remember
  • Avoid getting any water on your brush handle.  If you have wooden handles, the water will seep through and ruin the paint and the wood of your handles.
  • Avoid getting water around the ferrel ( the metal clamp that is attached to the hair ) it will start to ruin the glue or bond and will eventually separate .
  • If you are soaking your brushes for whatever reason, try not to let the liquids go pass the ferrel.
  • Lay it flat to dry on a clean towel on the edge of a flat surface ( i.e. table, sink). Do not dry them upwards as you will allow the water from the damp hair make its way to the ferrel and/or brush
Natural Brushes:
We suggest you shampoo all your natural brushes with a clear shampoo , baby shampoo is great! Most shampoos that are not clear tend to have wax in them which  can cause build up.

Synthetic Brushes:
We suggest you shampoo all your natural brushes  with either bar soap, olive oil or even dish detergent soap.   If your brushes were used for cream products, we suggest using olive oil to break down the oils then go back using bar soap to remove the excess oils.

For Professional Use : After every client or on the spot cleaning we like these brands

For Personal Use : We suggest you wash them once a week if you are using powders.  If you are using creams ( foundation / concealer ) brush, we recommend that you clean them immediately. Creams have moisture in it which means bacteria can grow.

If you have any cool tips that we can add to this, please let us know.

Eye Lash Extensions: FAQ

Eyelash extensions have truly revolutionized the world of cosmetics.  It's no mystery that the eyes are the first thing people look at, "smile with your eyes” With the Eyelash Extensions, your eyes will appear brighter, bigger and sexier.  Women love looking refreshed first thing in the morning, and feel no need for much make-up other than fluttering your set of Eye Lashes.  Guess what? You can swim in these , can you say VACAY, that’s right, chuck that mascara or strip lashes away and swim stress and worry free! We know we feel so much prettier, it’s was one of my BEST KEPT SECRET and probably will be yours. It's not for everyone due to its demand high maintenance :) ( side note, I am a licensed lash tech )

Eyelash Extensions are semi-permanent, and are applied individually lash by lash. Each eyelash extension is permanently bonded to a single natural eyelash, when the natural lash sheds due to the growth cycle, the eyelash extension will shed with it.

How long is the application?
It really depends on yur eye lash technician. Full set of lashes, can range anywhere from 1 hour (natural set) to  2 hours (dramatic set)
Refills take approx 30 mins.

How long do they last?
Each eye lash hair grows at its own rate and each eyelash hair is at a different point in its cycle. Naturally your eyelash cycle lasts approx. 60-90 days and a new lash grows in.  Typically a new set of eyelash extensions should last you anywhere between 2-3 weeks with the proper maintenance by the client.

How do I maintain my new set of lashes?
For the first 24 hours, do not get your lashes wet.  Avoid taking showers and take baths instead.  Also avoid swimming, saunas and facials.  You can continue to wash your face but work around the eyes.  Try to refrain using products with oil, as it will strip the bond and shorten the life span of your eye lash extensions.

How do I sleep at night?
Any type of rubbing or tugging will shorten the life span of your lashes, its best that you try to avoid this as much as possible.

How do I find a legit Eye Lash Technician?
Referrals are always great, but do your research and ask questions. Ask your technician about their training and experience.  Take a look at the their set up, or their hygiene practices.

Are you an ideal Candidate?
  • ·         Your eyes are free of signs and symptoms of infection and fully recovered from recent eye surgeries or procedures.
  • ·         You do NOT have allergies/sensitivities to acrylates or cyanoacrylate adhesives.
  • ·         You are comfortable lying down for a few hours with your eyes closed
  • ·         Exposing your eyelash extensions to water, hear, sauna, steam and friction?
  • ·         Applying eye cosmetics or skin care products to your eyelashes or your eyelids?
  • ·         Receiving irritation eye-are treatments, such as chemical peels, skin-resurfacing procedures, eyebrow waxing, lasers, eye surgeries, etc.?
  • ·         Wearing contacts (wear glasses instead)?
  • If you checked all the above, then you are an ideal candidate for Eyelash Extensions.

If you did not check one or more of the items listed above, consult with your Eyelash Stylist for further information to ensure beautiful, long-lasting results and a comfortable and relaxing experience.

After Care Guide for the ones who have them

24hr Tips:  Remember that the first 24 hours are especially crucial for the bonding to properly occur!  Common activities you  need to avoid during the first 24 hours include showering, washing the eyes, tanning, applying creams or lotions to the eye area, applying mascara or any eye make-up, excessively touching the lashes, spas, steam  rooms, sauna, swimming, exercising, contact lens solutions and sleeping on the lashes. Constant heat may cause the adhesive bond to weaken.

Daily Tips:  The most common causes of lash fall out before the end of your natural lash life cycle include excessively touching the lashes, use of oil based products, layering on excessive amounts of mascara which requires excessive cleaning, and frequent exposure to heat sources such as spas, steam rooms and tanning salons.

Sleeping Tips: We recommend sleeping on your back the first night to ensure your lashes do not become tangled while drying.  In the morning, use a mascara brush to gently separate and groom your new lashes. Any type of rubbing or tugging will shorten the life span of your lashes, its best that you try to avoid this as much as possible.
  • ·   Avoid using any oil based cleansers on or near the eye area. Use an oil-free eye make-up remover.
  • Do not use cotton balls, cotton rounds or swabs directly on the eyelashes as the fibers may get lodged in the bond area of your lashes.
  • Although mascara is not necessary with your eyelash extensions you can use it sparingly, on the tips only to achieve an even more dramatic look.  Avoid using oil based or waterproof mascara / liners as the ingredients in it will dissolve the bond of the adhesive. Ask your Lash Technician about specialty products for eyelash extensions
  • Avoid using harsh mechanical eyelash curlers as they can break both natural and synthetic lashes.  A heated eyelash curler can be used sparingly to help shape and curl lashes on the TIPS of the lashes ONLY.  Do not apply heated eyelash curler to the base of the lashes where the lashes are bonded

Re-fill and Re-lash: The look can last indefinitely with 45-60 minutes Re-Fill / Re-lash appointments every 2-3 weeks. Like your scalp hair, natural eyelashes grow and shed in a cycle, which is typically about 60 days (2 months). When a natural eyelash matures and falls out, a new eyelash has already been growing and quickly replaces it. People typically shed between 1 to 5 natural lashes each day, depending on their individual growth cycles. When properly applied, an eyelash extensions will remain in place until the natural lash on which it rests falls out. Re-lash appointments are necessary to replenish the fallen hairs and maintain the look.

*Above all, BE GENTLE!  Do not pick or pull your lashes and refrain from excessively rubbing your eyes.

I hope the information we have provided helps you with your decision.

Your Hands Tell All

"How old is she really?"  Plastic surgery procedures, treatments and injections to the face will have you guessing. But, there is a way to get your “hands” on the answer.
Advances in technology now allow for safe rejuvenation of the hands, which is more difficult to treat due to increased risk of scarring.

According to New Jersey Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Brian S. Glatt of Premier Plastic Surgery, “You can get your hands on a few quick fixes.”

  • Chemical peels or laser treatments can help improve the appearance of the hands. Lasers and light-based therapies such as intense pulse light, photodynamic therapy, q-switched lasers, and nonablative fractionated lasers (Fraxel re:store, Fraxel re:store DUAL) offer minimally invasive treatment options for rejuvenation of skin both on and off the face. Multiple treatment sessions are necessary for these devices which improve, each to varying degrees, fine wrinkles, brown spots, texture and redness. Your laser surgeon will help you decide which laser is the most appropriate for you to optimize your results.
  • Prominent hand veins can be successfully treated by injecting a medication into the veins (sclerotherapy) resulting in the disappearance of the injected vein. Advances in sclerotherapy including the introduction of Asclera (polidocanol), foam sclerotherapy, and new treatment methodologies offer more comfortable and effective means of treating unsightly veins. Typically, one or two treatment sessions are required. Radiesse, calcium hydroxylapatite, can address multiple aspects of the aging hand. This injectable product restores volume to the backs of the hand while simultaneously decreasing the appearance of prominent veins, tendons, and bones resulting in a more youthful appearance.
  • Fat injections can give the hands a full and youthful appearance. Your surgeon will remove unwanted fat from a specific area, and then reinject selected fat cells into your hands. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and is painless with a quick recovery time.

An individual’s hands are the biggest tell-all of a person’s true age. When examining the hands, the marked loss of fatty tissue results in a prominent appearance of the bones, tendons and blue (reticular) veins. Aging skin is characterized by surface roughness, volume loss, laxity, wrinkles, brown spots, and broken blood vessels. This not only applies to the face, but also to the hands.
